A harbour in the lee of the headlands

Dana Point's harbour sits in the lee of the headlands that give the town its name — high ground that takes the edge off the afternoon westerly and leaves Dana Cove calm enough for a first sea trial in any month of the year. Doheny, just inside the harbour mouth, is where owners actually anchor; the headlands above are whale-watching country, with grey whales passing on migration close enough to shore that the lookout boats barely leave the coast.

It is a quieter base than Newport Beach and an easier one than most of south Orange County — which is precisely why owners who boat rather than pose tend to end up here.

03What the water asks of a tender

What the water asks of a tender

Inside the harbour the job is short hops — slip to anchorage, dock to dinner — and a compact jet tender covers it without ceremony. Outside the breakwater the Pacific is honest ocean, and a run up the coast asks for a hull with freeboard and reserve.

A mid-size TurboJet or SportJet handles both lives comfortably. For yachts at anchor off Doheny, a classic Surmarine RIB is the unfussy answer — tubes that forgive a rough dock and a hull that does not mind being used.

04Jet drive where the swimmers are

Jet drive where the swimmers are

Dana Cove and Doheny are swimming water. On summer weekends the harbour fills with paddleboards and children off the transom, and a propeller behind the swim step is the hazard you think about all day.

Jet propulsion removes it. There is no exposed prop, the draft is shallow enough to nose into the beach, and low-speed manners around swimmers are exactly what these boats were designed for.

05Buying from Newport Beach

Buying from Newport Beach

Our showroom is a short drive up the coast in Newport Beach, and Dana Point owners typically view there by private appointment — the harbour gives us water for a proper trial, and the specification conversation happens unhurried.

Delivery and commissioning to Dana Point are part of the order: engine checks, a systems walkthrough and a handover on the water in your own harbour. Fitment advice is always guidance, never a guarantee — the survey of your yacht and the way you actually boat decide the final answer.

Dana Point questions, answered

  1. 01

Is Dana Point a good harbour for a jet tender?

One of the best in Orange County. The harbour is sheltered, the distances are short, and Dana Cove's calm water suits a jet tender's strengths — shallow draft, no exposed propeller near swimmers, and easy handling at low speed.

  2. 02

Can a tender cope with open water off the headlands?

Within reason, yes — the mid-size jet and diesel models have the freeboard and reserve for coastal runs in sensible conditions. They remain tenders rather than offshore boats, and we will say so plainly when we size one for you.

  3. 03

Do you deliver to Dana Point?

Yes. Viewings are usually held in Newport Beach, and delivery and on-water commissioning to Dana Point harbour are coordinated as part of the order.

  4. 04

Which tender suits a yacht kept in Dana Point?

It depends on the yacht's garage or davit and how you use the tender — guest transfers, harbour errands or coastal runs. Measure the constraints first; our fitment advice is guidance, never a guarantee, and the survey decides.
